The Minis: Britt Hawkes
Hi Britt! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Britt and I’m a jewelry designer based out of Portland, Oregon. When I’m not designing at my studio you’ll find me as shop manager/buyer for Johan. In my down time I’m usually running around the city with my husband and black lab pup named Rooney.
What led you to begin Sea + Pattern? What drew you to creating jewelry?
Sea + Pattern actually started as a Fashion Lifestyle Blog! I’ve worked in the fashion industry for 12 years and have always had a passion for clothing. I realized there weren't any bloggers in Portland that shared a similar aesthetic to mine, so I decided to give it a shot. It has been an exciting road and has also lead me to my main project, s+p jewelry.
My goal was to design a line that was easy to wear but also had design elements to it. The love I have for art and architecture blend together to make my jewelry designs.
Tell us more about the origins of the brand’s name.
It’s a pairing of nature and industry. (representation of my surroundings and background.)
How do you come up with your designs?
For me, it starts by having an organized and inviting studio space. Luckily, mine is the spare room at our apartment! I usually have music playing in the background, and from there I can sketch out ideas and let my mind wander. Using a clay material as my medium makes it very easy to experiment and quickly see a final product.
At The Glossary, we believe in women working together and helping one another. Why do you think it is important for women to support each other?
I'm thankful to be in a city with such welcoming and entrepreneurial women. There are too many great ideas that could potentially be wasted if women were to work against one another. I think it’s important for women to remember to always be their authentic selves, and welcome the idea of entrepreneurship.
What creative women do you find inspiring?
