The Minis: Megan Gilroy - Phoenix
Hi Megan! Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hey there, I’m Megan. I am an Arizona Native living amongst the cacti. I spend most of my weekdays as a full-time student at Arizona State University, working towards a degree in Design Management with one more year to go. You can also find me working at Local Nomad, a beautifully curated shop located in Phoenix. Not all my time is spent working; I love to handwrite lists, discover local gems in Phoenix, and snuggle up with my cat, Olive.
You have such a clean, minimal design sense. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
While I have always thought that clean and simple are best, a lot of my inspiration comes from my surroundings. Living in the desert my entire life has shaped my sense of style as desert landscapes are often minimal and warm in color. I have been drawing quite a bit of inspiration from the desert color palette lately, something about it just gets me every time. The people that I choose to surround myself with provide me with general inspiration on a daily basis. Whether it is my boyfriend’s tenacity, my parents’ encouraging nature, or my friends’ kind hearts, I am endlessly inspired.
Is there anything you carry with you every day? If so, why is it important to you?
In all honesty, the only thing that I carry with me every single day with no exception is my EPI pen, which is quite important if someone decides to mix some cashews into my meal. Although, if I could trade that in, I would much rather bring Olive everywhere, even at the risk of looking like a crazy cat lady. She really is the best cat in the entire world and quite possibly my soulmate.
What do you enjoy most about your career?
Right now, I consider my career as a student to be the most important endeavor in my life. I enjoy learning more and more about design, among other topics, and being able to share my knowledge through conversation with others. The aspect I enjoy the most about my current work state is the opportunity to meet new people and be a part of something we can all share. I never thought that I would see so many strangers from the internet turn into close friends.
What are some of your favorite places in Phoenix?
Every chance that I get, I am downtown at my favorite coffee shop, Lux Central. Even if it’s toasty outside, I recommend getting the hot Velvet Latte accompanied by a creation from the pastry case. Another one of my favorite restaurants is The Coronado - they serve vegetarian and vegan dishes and everything on the menu is fantastic. Some of my favorite local shops include Local Nomad (small batch handcrafted goods for every occasion), Phoenix General (all your minimalist dreams come true), and The Bosque/The Pueblo (it’s impossible to have too many plants, right?). I feel as though Phoenix is continuing to grow and I am excited to see what pops up in the next few years!
